Environmental Horticulture, Associate of Science (AS), Nursery and Greenhouse Technology Emphasis
The A.S. Degree in Environmental Horticulture with an emphasis in Nursery and Greenhouse Technology, prepares the student for professional work in the nursery and greenhouse plant production field by equipping them with skills in plant propagation, greenhouse design and small business skills.
Associate Degree Graduation Requirements
Complete all of the following:
- All Department Requirements listed below with a “C” or better or “P” in each course (at least 20% of the department requirements must be completed through SBCC).
- One of the following three General Education options:
- OPTION 1: A minimum of 18 units of SBCC General Education Requirements (Areas A-D) and Institutional Requirements (Area E) and Information Competency Requirement (Area F) OR
- OPTION 2: IGETC Pattern OR
- OPTION 3: CSU GE Breadth Pattern
- A total of 60 degree-applicable units (SBCC courses numbered 100 and higher).
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all units attempted at SBCC.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in all college units attempted.
- A minimum of 12 units through SBCC.

- Articulate principles of sustainable landscape maintenance, including soil health, nutrient replenishment, water efficiency, pest management, pruning, and health and human safety.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding successful greenhouse design and maintenance providing appropriate climates for propagating various plant types.
- Demonstrate proficiency in identifications of approximately 150 regionally common landscape plants.
- Demonstrate the use and installation of hardscope elements in a landscape, including pavers, concrete, wooden structures and other landscaping elements.
- Design and install a functional and water efficient landscape irrigation system.
- Explain the soil ecosystem, its formation, structure, maintenance of its health and relationship to landscape plant growth and vigor.
