Cosmetology, Certificate of Achievement (C)
The Cosmetology Department prepares students to become the creative, well-trained professionals demanded by today’s beauty industry. Programs qualifying graduates to take the California State Board licensing examinations in Cosmetology, Esthetician and Manicure are available. Lecture and “hands-on” training is provided at the SBCC Cosmetology Academy (525 Anacapa Street). The Cosmetology Program develops expertise in the science and techniques of hair, skin, makeup and nail care. Upon successful completion of a minimum 1000 clock hours of applied preparation in lecture and lab experience in Cosmetology (CSMT 121-124), the student will be eligible to take the California State Board examination to become a licensed cosmetologist. To qualify for this exam, the graduate must be 17 or older, have completed the minimum program requirements, and have proof of completing at least the 10th grade and legal California residency.
Students who complete the Cosmetology program will have achieved the following occupational competencies for employment in the field of cosmetology: hair cutting, hair styling, permanent waving, chemical straightening, hair coloring, bleaching, facials, makeup, hair removal, manicuring, pedicuring, eyelash lifts and eyebrow lamination, artificial nail applications.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Step 1: Obtain a Cosmetology Academy Information & Application packet at www.sbcc.edu/cosmetology or from the SBCC Cosmetology Academy 525 Anacapa Street. New classes begin throughout the academic year; starting dates are listed in the packet and on our website.
Step 2: Apply for Admission to SBCC 721 Cliff Drive, in the Student Services Building. Obtain an assessment test date when you submit your application to the college.
Step 3: Mail or deliver to the Academy a completed Cosmetology Application Form.
Step 4: After notification of eligibility, attend the mandatory Cosmetology Academy orientation meeting. Placement will be based on space availability and application delivery or postmark date.
Step 5: Students pursuing the A.S. degree are advised to meet with an academic counselor to discuss General Education requirements.
Certificate of Achievement Requirements
Complete all Major Requirements for the Certificate of Achievement with a C or better or Pass in each course. Candidates for a Certificate of Achievement are required to complete at least 20% of the major requirements through SBCC.

- Apply principles of shampooing, hair shaping and hair styling.
- Apply permanent waves, chemical relaxing and soft curls.
- Analyze scalp and hair with ability to identify scalp conditions, diseases, parasites and disorders.
- Apply all phases of hair coloring and lightening.
- Practice safety and sanitary practices and procedures at all times.
- Apply business practices in regards to salon finance management, retail sales, marketing, taxes and client management.
- Understand and execute all lengths and styles of haircuts.
- Apply gel nails and acrylic nails.
- Complete a basic facial.
- Apply eyelash lifts and eyebrow lamination services.
