Spanish for Heritage Speakers, Certificate of Achievement (C)
Students completing this certificate will use intermediate and heritage native speakers-level skills in Spanish with an introduction to the culture of Spanish speakers. This certificate will provide employers with verifiable proof in terms of speaking, reading, listening and writing Spanish. It will prepare students to achieve progress on their career path of their choice, to transfer to a university with strong second language skills and knowledge about Spanish-speaking communities.
Students will achieve listening, speaking and writing skills that increase the understanding and appreciation of value systems and social attitudes of different Spanish cultures. In addition, students will practice pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and cultural awareness to improve their communication in Spanish. The goal of this certificate is to expand the student's learning experience, exploration and enjoyment of a second language with the implied development of critical thinking and creative skills. Indeed, learning another language will increase opportunities for better employment and a higher salary, giving students a competitive edge in the global economy.
Students who can demonstrate the acquired skills will have access to occupational opportunities in all areas in which it is advantageous to be bilingual in English and Spanish at this level. Students who acquire these skills can work in teaching support roles, tutoring, nonprofit organizations, social work, jobs in the health care sector, government, business, customer service and more.
